HSBC Life Singapore’s biggest transformation may sit behind the scenes, but its results are increasingly visible to customers.
Insurance customers rarely see the complex systems that exist behind a policy, but they do feel every delay that those systems sometimes create. That is why improvements behind the scenes matter most when they make the customer journey simpler, faster and easier to navigate.
HSBC Life Singapore, this year’s Customer Excellence Award winner, made those outcomes a central measure of a major transformation completed in 2025. The insurer brought its Life and Health operations onto a single platform a year ahead of schedule, creating a common foundation across products, distribution and servicing.
The transformation was one of HSBC’s most complex global technology integrations, spanning an end-to-end operating model redesign, the migration of nearly one million policies, the decommissioning of almost 100 legacy applications, and the secure transfer of more than 25 terabytes of data—while maintaining full regulatory compliance and operational continuity. The impact is clearest in new business. For eligible cases, policy issuance reduced from next-day processing to under five minutes, with straightforward applications completed in as little as 30 seconds.
A similar redesign has taken place in the high-net-worth (HNW) bancassurance business, where submissions moved from paper to a digital journey. 85% of HNW applications are now submitted digitally, while application times have halved to around 45 minutes. Standard customer letters that previously took three days can now be fulfilled on the same day.
HSBC Life Singapore has paired those improvements in speed with greater personalisation. Its Next Best Action models analyse over 1,000 data dimensions to personalise recommendations based on individual customer needs and propensity to purchase. The technology now supports 60% to 70% of business-as-usual targeting and has delivered an uplift in product take-up.
HSBC Life also introduced safeguards. Sales Conduct Analytics flags unusual sales patterns, while independent welcome calls for complex products confirm that customers understand features, risks and suitability. A jargon-free investment-linked plan customer guide helps customers understand key features.
Customer experience has extended further into healthcare. Through initiatives such as Live Life Well workplace wellness partnership with NHG Health, HSBC Life is connecting insurance with preventive care, treatment and recuperation.
The improvements are significant. HSBC Life reported an approximately 24% improvement in customer Net Promoter Score (NPS), which tracks customers’ willingness to recommend the insurer.
